Bosch Fuel Injection Pump Models

What FUEL INJECTION PUMP
MODEL DOEs YOUR CAR HAVE?

Fuel injection pumps are not one-size-fits-all. Not only does each vehicle have slightly different variables to address as well as each pump needing specific and minute adjustments, but there are a number of models which you may encounter, each with its own unique characteristics and innovations as the technology improved. Here you'll find a comprehensive list of Bosch Fuel Injection pump models along with some details on what makes each model unique and in which vehicles you'd expect to find them.

The R11 was the first Bosch fuel injection pump made for the W113 and has a number of unique specifications that differentiates it from its successors.

The most obvious is the small viewing port for the plungers and springs, making these virtually inaccessible without disassembly of the pump body. Another is the lack of a stop solenoid on the right which was added for the R18.

The R18 featured some upgrades to the original design of the R11 and was eventually developed into a separate pumps for the Unites States (y) and European (z) markets.

Obvious differences include a larger viewing and access port for plungers and springs and a start and stop solenoid. It also features a longer pump housing and modified three-dimensional cam. The R18 was replaced by the R18Z which has ball pressure valves, no oil check valve and richer adjustment. The R18Y has a stop magnet, modified three-dimensional cam and guide tube for full-load adjustment screw.

R20Y

The R20Y and future pumps carried over the larger access port for plungers and springs. Minor adjustments can be seen in the bulk of the pump body, which was significantly reduced. Vestigial ports have been removed altogether while the body is slimmed down.

The R20Y was fitted with both start and stop solenoids and has force-feed oil lubrication.

The R24Y carried over many characteristics from previous pumps along with some minor improvements specifically for the U.S. market.

Characteristics include no start or stop solenoids, 4mm ball thrust valves, and a different three-dimensional cam. When installed on automatic transmission vehicles the vacuum control at the venturi control unit and throttle control linkage with dead travel are eliminated.
