Bosch Einspritzpumpe: An Original Painting Paying Homage to the Fuel Injection pump.

The latest addition to our auto-art gallery is an original painting paying homage to the history of Bosch fuel injection pumps that power the icons of Mercedes-Benz. Featuring a 2-plunger EP/ZEB2KL75R16 from a W111 220Seb, a pneumatic governor PES6KL70/320R7 from a W189 300d, and one of the final models, the PES6KL70B120R24Y from a W113 Pagoda.

The 2-plunger ZEA and ZEBs were produced from 1958 through 1965 for luxury models such as the W128, W111, and W112, the flagship models of their day. The 2-plunger pumps marked an upgrade from the previously used carburetors with improved fuel efficiency and more control over adjustments, however control was limited in comparison to other fuel injection pump models as its 2-plungers controlled 6 injectors, meaning adjustments applied to half the injectors rather than individually. The pump pictured in the artwork is a EP/ZEB 2KL75 R16 from a W111 220Seb. Learn more about the 2-plungers HERE.

The pump in center is a PES6KL 70/320 R7 from the W189 300d Adenauer. It is an example of a pneumatic governor pump and was produced from 1957 through 1958. It's successor, the PES6KL 70/320 R9/22 would serve as the foundation for all pumps that followed, making these a vital part of indirect gasoline fuel injection pump history despite being installed in less than 2,000 vehicles. The final pump is a 6-plunger PES6KL 70B120 R24Y from the W113 280SL. This pump represents one of the last before continuous fuel injection (CIS) took over in the 70s. Updates included a redesigned solenoid, removal of the fuel feed pump, various body modifications and a switch from pneumatic governors to unique 3D space cams and fly weights for better fuel/air mixture control. The R20's succeeded the R11 (230SL) and R18's (250SL), each having their own upgrades and adjustments along the way. Learn more about the R20 series HERE.

The painting was first sketched out in pencil on a black background based on images from our own fuel injection pump restorations. Color was added with acrylic markers and a final layer of shading was done with acrylic paint. Text was hand-done and based on retro industrial sans-serif typefaces.
